The Burma Studies Foundation announces the Sarah M. Bekker Burma Essay Prize for 2023. The prize of US$500 is awarded for the best academic essay of no more than 10,000 words on a subject dealing with Burma/Myanmar. The prize is open to graduate students in any academic field who are currently registered at a university or college. There are no citizenship or residence requirements.

Send an electronic copy of your paper (PDF format) to Prof. Jason Carbine, Chair, Burma Studies Foundation, jcarbine@whittier.edu.
Have your academic advisor send an email to jcarbine@whittier.edu certifying that the paper submitted is original research. This emailed note from your advisor should be signed and can simply be a few lines such as: "[So and so], a student pursuing a graduate program under my supervision, is submitting a paper, based on original research, for the Burma Essay Prize."
Receipt of your paper and your advisor's certification will be confirmed by email. If you and/or your advisor do not get confirmation within 48 hours of submitting the paper/certification, please email jcarbine@whittier.edu.

Your entry should be in English and received by Aug. 31, 2024.
The decision of the Prize Committee will be made by Oct. 31, 2024 and the winner will be notified before or on that date and the prize will be awarded immediately. The decision of the judges is final. The essay will be reviewed for publication in the Journal of Burma Studies.
